Text of poem

Fate makes playthings of men.
I saw the quick jump up. The young
Black belly lift and move in slow motion,
As if the boy practiced for gym class.

Jumping a horse with ease and grace without
As much as a jingle in his pocket. He cleared the obstacle
Full-bodied and swift. Even the boot chain links did not flinch.

But when the lad landed on the wine stained floor,
The M.T.A. workers had steam blasted the night before;
Time materialized another horse in the form of drug-sniffing dogs.
And the boy ran and ran, and ran and ran. Oh! See the poor boy run.

See him run. The handcuffs kept galloping, spiked teeth and all.
You must not lose track of him. He lay caged in an ambulance
shaped coffin.
And there he laid without utterance. Nor did he reminisce about tickets.
But he stayed without moving, foot-jerking and epileptic. He was
afraid to move or to breathe.

His skin gleamed white. Like angels’ dreams of immigrants who came
to this country dressed in poverty in search of upward mobility.
The salt tears fell like the Dead Sea rose, and cornered his eyes blind
“Human Being” I wanted to cry out. But remained silent. As silent as
the quarter in my pocket I pray he didn’t need for his one entitled call.
Nor the words, “Watch Out, Dogs!” I may not be his color, but I’m his
mother.
Let’s call upon community to judge this deviation and punishment
together.
