Text of poem
Dark. Quiet. The smell of
mothballs, nickels left
in woolen pockets
Spice, the cloves I helped
to stick in dark red apples,
Smell of rain
the rubber boots, umbrellas
my father's coat sleeves brush
against my eyelids.
into the corner.
I don't need
to close my eyes here.
Darkness feathers in layers and shades
gray-black and then blacker black,
the white crack of light
against which I whisper
Come find me now.
Lovely and terrible, this quiet
my knees brushing my chin my hands
touch the hard-shell leather shoe tops
I crouch into the dark
under the stairs, my shoes the wood
creaking right above my head.
They don't know where I am.
I shut my eyes and someone is laughing
little girls are wicked
run up and tag you
and pout when you will not play.
Whose game this time?
Ready or not, here I come.
But you don't come.
I'm lost here. Or one of the
little girls is lost
one of the little girls is teasing
laughing and running away
the clapping of patent leather maryjanes
on the driveway, running
hands, dress, that keep getting dirty
the red mark
left on her cheek like a stain.
You say, What a pretty dress,
and one little girl
and one little girl cries.
Which is the one
you look for under the stairs
behind the door
inside the closet
under the dark you ruffle
the musty coats aside
and find she's not there
anymore, she's not where you left her.
